I like to help people if they need help. I help them with whatever they need. Now I am a part of Brookside, I’m here to do whatever needs to be done.

Pam Lawrence has an unbreakable spirit. Her infectious and cheerful demeanor extends joy—with hugs and smiles for everyone she meets.  Pam had been married for ten years when she lost her husband to heart failure. After a decade together, she didn’t know how to move forward. She decided to sell her house and move in with some friends. When she moved in, she discovered that her friends were not who she thought they were. The environment in her home was hostile, and she did not feel safe. Then one day the situation escalated into a serious altercation. She felt threatened and knew that something had to change saying, "I didn't know what else to do."

And then she thought about Brookside. She soon connected with Housing Coordinator Robin Duncan who quickly found temporary housing for her. Afterward, she moved to one of Brookside’s affordable housing units where she has lived since late 2021. Pam enjoys her living arrangements and is grateful for the community support she found at Brookside. She says, "They make things happen very well. They help all kinds of people that need help, homeless, prison, or whatever.” She thinks back to when she moved in and says, “Ever since then everything's been good.”

Today Pam serves as our receptionist, welcoming and directing the many people who enter our doors. But Pam’s heart for service extends beyond her regular responsibilities. She says it this way, “I like to clean, and I like to answer the door. I like to help people if they need help. I help them with whatever they need. Now I am a part of Brookside, I’m here to do whatever needs to be done.”

Across our city, countless families and individuals share Pam’s story. Many have run out of options and feel forgotten and ignored. That is why Brookside Community Housing is dedicated to providing safe, affordable housing for those in our community. Your support allows Pam and many others to get back on their feet and rebuild their lives. When asked Do you wish to say anything else, Pam smiles and says, "I love everybody."
