shannon's Story

"My name is Shannon, and I found the Brookside Reentry program through the Justice Center. I was incarcerated and looking for change. I got tired of going back and forth. I just wanted to break the cycle for my children.

I got into the women’s house and brought my son about February of this year. He’s been with me since.

What Brookside has done for me: it has created a safe space for my kids to be in, a sober place. It’s a really good support system. They definitely go above and beyond. They’ll help you and meet you where you are.

I’m grateful because, without this program, my life would probably have spiraled. They’ve been walking alongside me this entire year. My life has done a complete 180. I got my license, I got a car, I just gained a lot of resources, and I think the structured setting is what helped me get there.

I want my children to have a chance to see life in a different light, not the typical poverty. I always keep that at the forefront of my mind. That’s what makes me keep pushing and keep going, because I’m determined."
